Remembering Tim Russert June 13, 2008

I will miss Tim Russert.
I looked forward to Meet the Press on Sunday mornings because I felt he did a pretty good job of holding politicians accountable for their positions, or lack of positions, on the issues. Sometimes I didn’t like what he said, but he was equally challenging to whomever he was interviewing.
He was 58 years old, and died of a heart attack.
Hello. Wake up call.

I couldn’t agree with this cartoon more. The media is doing a good job of drilling consumer confidence into the ground without any help from anyone else.

It’s that time of year again. The Great State Fair of Texas is here, so I had to post these pictures so Roseanna could enjoy a trip down memory lane, since she is in SoDakLand.

Peace in Kennebunkport July 18, 2007

Yep, Kennebunkport is the home of W’s family retreat. And ya’ll thought that was Crawford, TX, right? My New England friend, Alison, who sees the world much as I do, also has a weekend place in the neighborhood, and made it a point not to leave town recently when W invited Russian President Putin to town for some high level hob-knobbing and arm-twisting. Alison even brought her 4-legged child, sporting his own hat. Note Alison’s knee – - if you look close you can see the ugly scar from her recent knee surgery. I am so glad you are back on your, dear friend.

Puppy From Iraq Ties Family to Slain Soldier
CONCORD, N.H. (May 25) Associated Press- The family of Army Spc. Justin Rollins feels a little better thanks to a puppy, fresh from a nearly 6,000-mile journey from Iraq , that connects them to one of the soldier’s last happy moments.
Seeing photos of the 22-year-old nuzzling a puppy from a newborn litter the night before his death in a roadside bombing in Iraq prompted Rollins’ family and girlfriend to start pushing to adopt Hero, who arrived in New Hampshire on Friday.

Before going to Iraq, Rollins’ unit was deployed to help disaster victims after Hurricane Katrina. While he was there, he also helped in pet rescues.
“It was the last bit of happiness Justin had,” said Rollins’ girlfriend, Brittney Murray.
Rollins and some other soldiers from the 82nd Airborne found the puppies outside an Iraqi police station March 4 but weren’t allowed to bring them back into their barracks. Rollins was killed the next day in Samarra.

Army Spc. Justin Rollins holds Hero as a puppy in a photo taken March 4, the day before Rollins was killed by a roadside bomb in Samarra.
After Murray saw the photos, she sought help finding the short-haired dog. U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes contacted the U.S. Central Command, which ordered the 82nd to retrieve the pup and turn it over to delivery company DHL.
Hero was named as a reminder of the man who planned to propose to Murray on his next visit home, she and Rollins’ mother said.
The female pup arrived Thursday night at Kennedy International Airport in New York, visited a veterinarian and arrived in New Hampshire overnight. The floppy-eared pooch – mostly white, with brown spots along the right side of its muzzle and paws still too big for its 15-pound body – was a hit Friday as she sniffed around Hodes’ office, pausing to piddle on the carpet.
Whether the mixed-breed puppy is definitely the one in the photo didn’t matter. Several people claimed credit for the dog’s name, but everyone agreed it was a fitting tribute to Rollins, whose parents said he was always an animal lover.
“We have a dog and three cats at home. When he was little, they all were on his bed,” said his mother, Rhonda.
Rollins was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with a baseball signed by Red Sox player David Ortiz, who met him last summer shortly before Rollins’ unit was deployed.

“He really did believe in what he was fighting for,” Rhonda Rollins said of her paratrooper son. “I think he’d be thrilled there was a positive story from the negative thing that happened to us. … He was such a happy-go-lucky guy.”

Soldiers on Easter April 7, 2007

There are thousands of members of our armed services who won’t be home with their families for Easter.
Here’s to wishing them a safe and blessed Easter, and a safe return home.
Many of the people I work with have family members serving overseas in the armed forces. A couple of years ago I created a video for my company’s annual award presentation to recognize those dedicated individuals. I asked Jeff at my office to make an AVI version of it so that I could share it here. I hope you enjoy it.

This is NASA astronaut Astronaut Sunita L. Williams in an official NASA portrait on Sept. 22, 2004, in Houston.

Sunita is an avid marathon runner. She is also the current Expedition 14 flight engineer. Her hometown is Needham, Mass., and she will run the 26.2 miles of the Boston Marathon tethered to a treadmill aboard the space station on April 16, 2007, at the same time as the actual Boston Marathon is run on Earth.
I think that is pretty darn cool!

Incompetence: An Attorney General who says that he wasn’t aware that 10% of the US attorneys who work for him throughout America were being fired.
Gross Incompetence: He has the full confidence of his boss.
Whether you personally fall left or right of center, it’s still hard not to wonder, “where is the leadership in our country?”
Maybe Jeff Foxworthy needs to take his fifth graders to Washington DC.
