Remembering Tim Russert June 13, 2008

I will miss Tim Russert.
I looked forward to Meet the Press on Sunday mornings because I felt he did a pretty good job of holding politicians accountable for their positions, or lack of positions, on the issues. Sometimes I didn’t like what he said, but he was equally challenging to whomever he was interviewing.
He was 58 years old, and died of a heart attack.
Hello. Wake up call.

I couldn’t agree with this cartoon more. The media is doing a good job of drilling consumer confidence into the ground without any help from anyone else.

Peace in Kennebunkport July 18, 2007

Yep, Kennebunkport is the home of W’s family retreat. And ya’ll thought that was Crawford, TX, right? My New England friend, Alison, who sees the world much as I do, also has a weekend place in the neighborhood, and made it a point not to leave town recently when W invited Russian President Putin to town for some high level hob-knobbing and arm-twisting. Alison even brought her 4-legged child, sporting his own hat. Note Alison’s knee – - if you look close you can see the ugly scar from her recent knee surgery. I am so glad you are back on your, dear friend.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? March 25, 2007

Incompetence: An Attorney General who says that he wasn’t aware that 10% of the US attorneys who work for him throughout America were being fired.
Gross Incompetence: He has the full confidence of his boss.
Whether you personally fall left or right of center, it’s still hard not to wonder, “where is the leadership in our country?”
Maybe Jeff Foxworthy needs to take his fifth graders to Washington DC.
Farewell to Molly Ivins February 1, 2007

I first came to know Molly Ivins in 1984 when, as a reporter for the Texas Observer, she was a guest political science lecturer during my freshman year at UTA. She was also a senior political columnist for The Dallas Times Herald and more recently the Fort Worth Star Telegram before her column went into syndication.
Much like her friend, Ann Richards, Molly was a sharp tongued, quick witted Texas woman who attacked her subject with humor sometimes so pointed that it was often uncomfortable to real her words without taking a breath before the attack. Brutally honest, usually right, always upfront with her viewpoint, you never had to wonder what Molly Ivins thought about politics, war, empowering the weak, or ridiculing the powerful. She once said, “Good thing we’ve still got politics — finest form of free entertainment ever invented.” She had fun with politics, but she also took the responsibility of being politically involved very seriously. In fact, a requirement of her freshman lecture course was a voter registration card.
Molly Ivins fought cancer for the last 8 years of her life, in and out of remission on three different occasions. One can’t help but wonder if she and Ann Richards are enjoying a big Texas-sized margarita and some chips and salsa, and looking down upon all of the goings on. My biggest regret is that she won’t be around for the next big campaign season. It won’t be the same without her.
