Autumn Has Felt More Like Winter October 18, 2009

We had our first brush with Winter this week. I went to Harrisburg on Thursday with Maureen and by the time we made it back to Jersey and me back to the neighborhood, there was about an inch of wet snow on the ground. It wasn’t a problem but definitely it was a reminder of what is ahead. Up this week: NJ Mopar Group Sussex County Meet & Greet on Tuesday night and trips to Washington DC on Thursday & Baltimore on Friday.
Halloween is just around the corner. Have you got your costume ready?
A Very Busy Week for Me October 10, 2009

Gary, Melinda and Sugar came to town to visit. We made it to all of the hot spots in Manhattan during their four day stay, plus we ran over to Hershey,PA to tour the chocolate factory. I couldn’t help but think that my friend, Eric, would have thought he had died and gone to heaven surrounded by millions of Kit Kats and Hershey bars. I think we crammed about as much as we possibly could into 4 days, and I feel a lot more confident about where to go an what to do now when guests come to stay for a while.

A Beautiful Mother’s Day May 10, 2009

I took mom to dinner last night for Mother’s Day and then she got to experience her first car show when I took her along to the Saturday Night Classic at Whiskey Cafe at the Meadowlands. I spent all day today working on the house, cleaning, shampooing the carpets, digging in the dirt outside, etc. I love this time of year in the Northeast. 65-75 degree days< 50’s at night. Awesome! weather, and a beautiful Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. And Godspeed, Granny.
Some pictures from around the house today:
The Road Home April 26, 2009

It occurred to me as I was driving home that many of you who frequent my website from Texas really may not have a good picture in your mind of where I live. When you hear New Jersey it is easy to visualize images of Newark, Elizabeth, and Jersey City. Perhaps memories of scenes from The Sopranos come to mind.
In reality I live in a very beautiful part of Northwestern New Jersey, away from the rush of New York City. Although its only 24 miles or so from work, sometimes it seems like hundreds not because of distance but because of the topography.I snapped a few photos on the way to the house this afternoon for your enjoyment.

A Year in New Jersey March 29, 2009
Posted by Chris in 2008 in Review, Family & Friends, In the Neighborhood, New Jersey, Texas.1 comment so far
It was a year ago this week that I started my journey from Texas to New Jersey. April 1 was the day that it was announced, and I was on the road by April 3rd. To say that it has been a year of change would be an understatement.
Things I miss in Texas:
Arrowhead Resort. Losing my weekends at the lake was almost a deal-killer.
Coworkers - When you work with the same people for 15 years you get attached to them.
My House & Big Yards - I loved my house in Mansfield
Affordable Landscapers (Mow and Blow is $200 bucks / mo here) for small yard.
Trash Days - They only collect trash once a week here. I was spoiled.
TexMex - its just not a big deal up here. Italian & Chinese, yes, but they don’t do TexMex up here. What’s up with that?
Whataburger - They don’t exist north of Arkansas.
70mph Speed Limit - That was wonderful in Texas. Here in NJ there must be a speed cop for every mile of I-80. And they are good at what they do.
Warm Weather - I have never liked the severe heat, but I have learned to like extreme cold even less. Ok, so my blood is thin. I am working on it.
TexMex - Tacos, cheese enchiladas, Guacamole. Not the Southwestern stuff, either. REAL TexMex.
Lowe’s Farm - Great Neighborhood, Great People.
Lower Taxes (Trust me on this one!!!!) – Its even worse now with the economy. Governor Corzine would like nothing better than to take away the deductibility of my property taxes and mortgage interest. This wasn’t an issue in Texas because, HELLO, there is no state income tax there.
TV News - I know they have journalists here. I was just used to the personalities in the DFW market because I knew so many personally. That said, NBC 4 here does a pretty good job.
Big Supermarkets (Like Tom Thumb, Kroger, etc) – The stores here are small. Think “Winn Dixie”. Really.
Sonic - Oh, that crushed ice.
TexMex - Not sure if I mentioned this: Chicken enchiladas, refried beans, toriliias.
DFW Airport (I’ll NEVER complain about it again) – EWR is just a nightmare. If the wind blows, so does EWR.
Central Time Zone - I never thought about if before, but I think the peeps on the east coast get screwed out of an hour.
Good Morning Radio - I still pipe in Mix 102.9 from DFW. I miss Tony but start my days with Victoria, and I listen to Ken out of Fort Worth on Saturday nights.
Affordable HOA Dues – They just went up to $100 bucks a month here.
Swimming Pools – I never used it. Don’t know why I miss it, but I do.
Mrs. Bairds – This is Wonder-land here.
Thunderstorms – I miss those big Texas thunderboomers. I don’t remember there being a real thunderstorm since I have been here
—————————————————————-
Okay, now for the good stuff about being in New Jersey…..
Winter – Okay. I know what I said about the cold but the snow isn’t THAT bad. As time goes on, I am building up my resistance to the cold. The winters are much more interesting that I expected them to be and I really didn’t have a hard time managing through the snow as I expected I might.
A Lot of Mom and Pop Establishments. It is refreshing that there isn’t a chain store or national brand restaurant on every corner. Local businesses are alive here, but struggling with the economy. I support the locals as much as I can.
Gas Stations – 100% Full Service at Self Service Prices. Not a bad deal, especially in the winter. Supposedly you aren’t expected to tip the gas jockeys here but I do anyway.
Nice Neighbors – The cookie brigade started the first week I moved in. The neighbors are incredibly friendly.
Traffic Commute – Not as Bad as Dallas was. Really. No one believes me, but its true. I think its because they have public transportation down to a science here. I drove the same distance but spent a lot more time on the road in Dallas than I do here.
Work - I have a great office, a wonderful staff, and the facility is terrific.
NYC - Proximity to the city is about 20-30 minutes. That’s cool. I don’t go often but its easy to go when I want to. New York City is just a magical kind of plac e- no where else on earth quite like it.
Nature – Believe it or not, I live in the country. Tree shaded two lane roads. Deer. No freeway noise. Bears and deer roam freely but they don’t bother anyone.
My Mopar Friends – I have joined a Charger group and made some really good friends outside of work.
Basement – Awesome media and recreation room with a huge bar. Why didn’t we have basements in Texas? I am sure there was a reason.
Multi-Story Houses – I have always owned a single story house – now I have three floors. I kinda like it.
Car Inspections – Inspection is good on a new car for four years, then renews every two after that. The state does the inspection at no charge. (I havent quite figured out yet how I am going to handle the whole car registration and inspection thing yet – - I guess I am ultimately going to have to bite the bullet and register the cars here)
———–
So, after a year, here is the deal. Of course I miss Texas. It was home for so many years, and it will ALWAYS be my home away from home and the place I go back to. It is hard to learn a whole new environment. Everything felt so unfamiliar and different, but it didn’t take long before that difference became a new freshness, and the strangers became family.
Now, after a year, I can say New Jersey is home. The people here have been great to me, they accept my southern accent and heritage, and they have taken me in as their own. The Northeast is rich in history and heritage that I am fortunate to experience. There are so many places to go and see that are within easy driving distance right from my front door.
Of course I have had my challenges. The recent death of my grandmother was a blow, but I am working through that. The economy has brought on a lot of professional stress, but I know I am fortunate nonetheless. I really enjoy my work here and I feel like I make a difference. I am energized and excited about change, and I enjoy being challenged.
Trust me, I know how to find my way back to Texas and I will continue to do so as often as I can. But it does feel good when I come back home – - and right now, home for me is in Long Valley, New Jersey.
- I get back to the lake about once every 2-3 months or so. Even though I can’t go evevry weekend like I used to, its great knowing I still have my place there waiting on me.
- It was hard to put the for sale sign in the yard.
- Tex Mex at its Best
- I know what I said about La Hacienda Ranch, but El Fenix rules too. I took it for granted and now often have their chips and sausa shipped in to me.
- Wonder just isn’t as good.
- Beautiful Neighborhood. I really enjoyed living there and working on the HOA. I still miss these folks a lot.
- The nearest Sonic is several states away. I miss the crushed ice and slushes.
- This was a particularly tough day in April of 2008 when I said goodbye to the people I had worked with for 15 years. I still talk to them all of the time though.
- I have always had an obsession for thunderstorms. We don’t see them here.
- I still listen to 102.9 online even though Tony has moved on. V still starts my days with a smile.
- The Garden State
- There are tons of interesting places within easy driving distance of my house
- Its great being so close to the city
- A center hall Colonial takes a little getting used to for a Texas but it works.
- Not sure why they don’t have basements in Texas but I am enjoying mine here.
- …and I am enjioying it mostly because of the bar!
- Two great Mopar friends I have made.
- I have made a lot of friends since I have been here.
- You wouldn’t expect this to be my neighborhood, buit it is.
- I am blessed, especially right now, with a good job and a nice place to go to work.
- There are a lot of locally owned businesses here. I try to frequent them as much as I can.
- So the winters were everything I expected, and more. But its okay. My blood is starting to thicken a bit.

Weekend Chores February 7, 2009
Posted by Chris in Around the House, Automotive Interests, In the Neighborhood, granny.add a comment
Next weekend I will be in Minnesota checking on Granny, meeting with her banker, and dealing with her apartment so I have been spending most of today just trying to catch up on the domestic. stuff here at the house. I got all of my tax stuff together (many thanks to Victoria for the referral to her CPA).

Doing taxes and paying bills at my desk. (And, of couse, a little Facebook
socializing)

My Presidential Limo Collection. Cool, huh?
I knew I would have to have help this year when I got my W-2 and the tax forms from the relocation company. Its a bit more complicated than I wanted to tackle on my own.
I also got my bills paid (not much $$ left after that undertaking) and also Granny’s bills.
The biggest accomplish today, however, was just getting my filthy truck cleaned. Months of snow, road grime, and salt had taken its toll.

After. Much better. I like it again!
I think there was dirt from Texas still on it.

Who Would Have Ever Thought? January 24, 2009
Posted by Chris in Economy, Family & Friends, In the Neighborhood, granny, weather.1 comment so far
Who would have ever thought that I would move to a place where I can walk out my door and see crazy people ICE FISHING. I am not kidding, people!

I can’t believe Budd Lake is like an ice rink. Totally new for this Texas boy.
I have spent most of the day today just catching up on things that I needed to get done. Having not had a haircut in way too long, I went to get a bit of a trim but Nicole wasn’t there. Another lady took care of me though, and did a good enough job I guess.

No more beard. I think it was making me look old.
I have also had a few wardrobe malfunctions lately because nothing I own fits me anymore. So I spent all morning buying some new duds to get me through. This is the first time in MANY MANY years that I was able to by clothes off a normal department store rack instead of a big and tall shop. That was a cool feeling.
Now for a Granny update. I had Granny moved from Lake Ridge to Galtier Care Center in St. Paul, MN. My cousin, Ticky, is the director of social work at Galtier and she has been an awesome help. It is such a challenge living so far away and trying to take care of a family member. Granny’s cognitive condition continues to deteriorate pretty rapidly, now to the point that sometimes she doesn’t know who I am when I call her. That is to be expected as her kidney function continues to decline. It’s not a good situation at all, but we feel blessed that at least she is not in any pain.
I’ve tried to stay in touch with Tony as he deals with the unexpected changes in his life. It’s hard to see a friend going through such a hard time but I am amazed at his positive attitude and determination. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t either experienced job loss themselves or had it hit very close to home with someone they care about. I sure hope better days are ahead.
New Jersey Lesson: Listen to the Weatherman December 19, 2008
Posted by Chris in Around the House, In the Neighborhood, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Weather Report, weather.4 comments
OK, here’s the deal. I am a Texan, and in Texas, the weatherman is never right, so we don’t listen to what they say. Lesson: that doesn’t work in New Jersey. When they say “Winter Storm Warning”, believe them!

Me wrapping up clearing off the driveway – - – for the third time in
three hours!
I was at work when the snow started around 10am. By the time the company closed due to the weather, there was already 3 inches on the ground, and by the time I fought may way home, I had better than 5 inches at the house.
And here is the forecast for the next several days:
Yeah. Are we having fun yet?
In terms of my travel plans to Texas, right now everything is on track for Monday, but you can see the weather still looks a little rough.

Jack Frost Swings Through the Neighborhood Overnight December 7, 2008
Posted by Chris in Around the House, Family & Friends, In the Neighborhood, New Jersey, Tis the Season, travel, weather.3 comments
It’s pretty cold up here! Yep it is. And Jack Frost
was making his rounds last night as well.

We had a light dusting over night that was really pretty
to wake up to this morning. It went all the way into
the city, so I am told. It was nothing like the October
Blizzard we had before Halloween, though.
I heard from Gary and Mel this weekend. They are on
their way to Fort Lauderdale via the Southwest Airlines
cattle car (hey, whatever it takes, right?) to settle in
before their big cruise that leaves next Friday.
Sights and Sounds of Christmas on Black Friday in New Jersey November 28, 2008
Posted by Chris in Around the House, In the Neighborhood, Tis the Season.5 comments
After doing our part to contribute to a successful Black Friday at Burlington Coat Factory, Wal-Mart, and Target, it was time to work on Christmas lights in the yard. Now before I say anything else, yes, this year is different at my place. Those of you who know me may remember that past years involved a very coordinated, clear light display in the yard that would rival anything you might see at a fancy 5-Star hotel. Not wanting to get on the roof of a 3 story house or pay anyone else to do it, I took a different approach this year – - and yes, folks, I really did use multi-color lights.

After the yard lights. Not up to my normal standards like I did in
Texas, where everything was bigger and brighter!

Yes, that is a mixture of colors. I have violated my own rules!

Front Door, using the flash on the camera

My Deer. Not sure about the clear lights there. I might have a color
violation going on.
Thanksgiving Dinner November 28, 2008

The first Thanksgiving in the new house but the
tradition of face-stuffing remained in tact.
Congratulations to my Dallas Cowboys!
- Roseanna and Beacon on Thanksgiving Day
- I should have taken a picture BEFORE I sliced into it!
- Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanskgiving without Roseanna’s Eggs
- In the past the plan was to use real whipping cream but this year I used cool whip! It worked out fine.
- Southern Dressing made with yellow cornbread! This is very rare in New Jersey.
- The electric buffet came in handy
- Ready, Set, GO!!!
Rainy Saturday Gave Way to a Beautiful Fall Sunday November 9, 2008
Posted by Chris in In the Neighborhood, New Jersey, weather.1 comment so far
It was a beautiful Sunday in Northern New Jersey.
I spent much of the day working in the yard,
pruning back some of the landscaping for
the upcoming winter. Sadly I lost two trees from
the early snow storm but thankfully it looks like
the third one I was worried about will make it.

We had a huge Halloween party at the office today.
My team is so large that they have multiple themes,
each centered around movies. Also includes was a
chili cook-off and a dessert contest. Knowing how
competitive I am you can imagine that I entered both.
The “Light Dusting” Turned Into a Full-Blown Nor’easter October 28, 2008
Posted by Chris in Around the House, In the Neighborhood, New Jersey, Pets, Weather Report, beacon, weather.2 comments
I woke up this morning to a light dusting of snow
outside. Driving wasn’t much of an issue. But
during the day, it got progressively worse until
tonight it took me over 3 hours to get home to a
house that was covered with snow and was without
electricity. As of this writing, it is 11:48pm and
its 44 degrees in the house! The snow has finally
stopped but the wind is blowing terribly and it looks
like I lost all but two of my trees in the yard.

And it isn’t even Halloween yet. I don’t like this trick

I didn’t have a shovel or a plow. I had to rake out some trenches by hand.
It took me an hour to get into the garage.

Sunday Recovery October 26, 2008
Posted by Chris in Around the House, Family & Friends, In the Neighborhood, Texas, Weather Report, dallas cowboys, weather.add a comment
Yesterday’s rain gave way to a beautiful, sunny Autumn
Sunday.

View from the front porch on a beautiful October Sunday.

Based on my unofficial Texas birdbath rain guage, it looks like we got
almost two inches yesterday.
Although my frustration regarding the fact
that the Dallas Cowboys, for yet another week, will not
be on TV in the New York City market is foremost in my
mind today, there is plenty to do before the Jets and
Giants play. (By the way, next season I will be adding
DirectTV and Sunday Ticket in the rec room downstairs
to alleviate this aggravation every single weekend.)
Last night I got Roseanna’s bedroom ready for her visit
three weekend from now. Haven’t figured out Granny’s
accommodations yet but it’s a big house – there’s plenty
of room and beds.
I leave out early in the morning for my Amtrak ride to
Washington DC.
Rainy Saturday & Breaking Snow News October 25, 2008
Posted by Chris in In the Neighborhood, New Jersey, weather.2 comments
I got moving a little early this morning to beat the rain.
Had to pick up some lights for the burned out fixture
in the kitchen and the landscape lighting in the front
yard. I took mom over to Hackettstown to breakfast
at the River Star Diner. It’s a good place but it just
isn’t Texas. What can I tell ya. Later I made it by
Target to get the stuff I need to cook for the gang
at work for Halloween.
Taken from the booth at the back of the River Star
Diner with my cheap cell phone. Those white dots
are ducks. I told them they better get it in gear and
head south.
Here is today’s NEWSFLASH! The neighbor next door
informed me that I would be nuts not to have a snow
thrower for the winter. Apparently I have underestimated
the serious of the snowfall here in the winter as well as
the challenge in shoveling the sidewalk, something I
am responsible for by law here.
like, here is what I am dealing with. Am I out of
my mind?
So, at Lowes I looked at the snow throwers similar
to the one above and I am now on the lookout
for one on sale. Looks like it will be an unplanned
expense of about $600.00. It’s not just the expense
that concerns me – I will figure that out – but it is
also the space needed to store such a monster.
I’m good with it – - maybe this is one of those
miracles in disguise I was blogging about.

Putting the Charger to Bed for the Winter October 18, 2008

I washed the car today and put it to bed for the winter.
We’ll see if I can actually keep from driving it. By all
accounts, we are just weeks away from the first real
snow and that means road salt, so its probably time to
put the silver bullet to bed for a bit.
